Padma Shri recipient orthopaedic surgeon Dr BKS Sanjay has been nominated as a member of the academic council of the prestigious 102-year old Haridwar based Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya. Since its foundation in 1902, this university continues to spread education in a range of fields in addition to Vedic sciences. The university has a total of 25 academic departments. The notable alumni of this university include filmmaker Chetan Anand, Yoga Guru Swami Ramdev and actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui among others.
In November 2021, Dr Sanjay was presented the Padma Shri award by the President of India for his distinguished services. Having seen various aspects of road traffic accidents in his 40-year professional career and the personal, social and financial suffering of the victims, he has taken a resolve to increase awareness among the affected and general public about the impact of road traffic accidents in India. He started a public awareness campaign in 2002 and since then has delivered dozens of talks on AIR and Doordarshan- Dehradun and Delhi. He and his team have delivered more than 200 free public awareness lectures in different educational institutions. He also provides free orthopaedic consultation to BPL card holders every Saturday.
