A new type of fraud has started in various States under the guise of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). The police and the Election Commission have warned people to stay alert. Officials have clearly said that SIR work does not require any OTP to be shared by the voters.
The SIR process is expected to start soon in Uttarakhand. At present, this process is going on in Uttar Pradesh and 12 other States. According to officials, some people in Uttar Pradesh have received calls from the fraudsters pretending to be Booth Level Officers (BLOs). These callers ask people to share the OTP that comes on their mobile phones. After getting the OTP, they reportedly take control of the person’s accounts to defraud them.
The Chief Electoral Officer of Uttarakhand has said the SIR process has not begun in the State yet. He also explained that BLOs ever ask any voter for an OTP. Their work is only to collect forms and help people update their voter details. If a person fills the SIR form online, they may receive an OTP, but it has to be entered by the voter themselves. It should never be shared with anyone else.
The cyber police has warned people to stay alert and not trust any call asking for an OTP in the name of SIR. Special Task Force senior superintendent of police Navneet Singh Bhullar said that awareness campaigns will soon be started to inform the public about such frauds.
