Ballupur & Mohkampur flyovers lit up after days of darkness

ANJALI YADAV / Dehradun
The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) undertook necessary repairs to restore lighting on the Ballupur and Mohkampur flyovers on Tuesday. The lights on these flyovers had not been functioning for days with commuters raising concerns about the risk posed to motorists at night, especially during the monsoon season. Streetlights on the Ballupur and Mohkampur flyovers remained non-functional for days, leaving portions of these busy stretches poorly lit at night.
Commuters said that motorists may find it harder to spot road conditions, vehicles and other obstacles on dark stretches of flyovers. Localite Ashutosh Bhagat said that the streetlights on the Mohkampur flyover had remained non-functional for a considerable period, reflecting negligence on the part of the authorities. “If an accident occurs due to poor visibility, authorities often ask motorists to drive carefully. But ensuring proper lighting on flyovers is also the responsibility of the department concerned,” he said.
After the issue was raised with the authorities by The Pioneer, the MCD light inspector Ranjeet Rana said that a minor fault had developed in the streetlights on the Ballupur flyover. He said that the fault has been rectified and the lights are functioning again. Local councillor Ankit Aggarwal claimed that the lights had remained non-functional for the past four to five days before the repairs were carried out. The lighting on the Mohkampur flyover was also restored after the issue was brought to the notice of the authorities.
The issue has once again highlighted concerns regarding the maintenance of basic civic infrastructure on some of the city’s busiest roads, with residents calling for quicker action to address such problems.
