Councillors give MCD one-week deadline to act on board decisions

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE / Dehradun

More than a month after the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) board meeting on April 29, councillors have expressed dissatisfaction over the delay in implementing proposals approved during the meeting. They have given the MCD a week’s ultimatum to begin action on the proposal. The board had approved 65 proposals, but councillors claim that no progress has been made so far. They said that a memorandum was submitted to mayor Saurabh Thapliyal on May 25, seeking speedy implementation of the decisions, but no visible movement has taken place since then.

Several councillors warned that they may launch a protest if work on the approved proposals does not begin within the next week. Councillor Amita Singh said that councillors had shown patience as the new municipal commissioner Alok kumar Pandey had recently taken charge. “We have been waiting because a new municipal commissioner has joined the corporation. However, if work on the approved proposals does not start soon, we will have to take appropriate action,” she said. Councillor Ankit Aggarwal said that more than a month has passed since the board meeting and the approved proposals are still awaiting implementation. He said that councillors would be left with no option but to intensify their opposition if the administration continues to delay action.

Other councillors including Bhupendra Singh also raised concerns over the pace of implementation and urged the corporation to start work on the approved proposals without further delay. The councillors said that the resolutions were passed after detailed discussions in the board meeting and covered a range of civic and development-related issues. They maintained that timely implementation is necessary to ensure that the benefits of the decisions reach residents. The issue comes days after a group of BJP councillors met the mayor and sought speedy implementation of key board decisions, including proposals related to municipal employees and sanitation workers. Municipal officials have not yet issued a detailed response to the councillors’ latest ultimatum. However, the mayor had earlier stated that the process for implementing the board’s decisions had already been initiated and that the remaining formalities would be completed at the earliest.
