Police in Dehradun arrested a Bangladeshi national who was allegedly residing illegally in the Selaqui area and running a clinic as a Bengali doctor under a false identity. The accused, identified as Amit Kumar, original name Chayan Adhikari, is under interrogation by the Local Intelligence Unit (LIU), Special Branch, Special Operations Group (SOG), local police and the Intelligence Bureau (IB).
The arrest followed a confidential input received by Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh about a foreign national living in Selaqui area with a changed identity. Acting on the information, an LIU team detained the man at Dhoomnagar Chowk, Selaqui on Sunday. He initially introduced himself as Amit Kumar, son of Manisant Adhikari, a resident of West Bengal but later admitted his real name and disclosed that he belonged to Jessore, Bangladesh.
The SSP informed that the police recovered a forged Aadhaar card, Permanent Account Number (PAN) card and driving license from his possession. Singh said that Adhikari has been booked under the Foreigners Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Selaqui police station.
He informed that during questioning, the accused revealed that he entered India in 2017-18 through Benapole border on a Bangladeshi passport and went to Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh where he lived with his uncle who ran a clinic as a Bengali doctor. To conceal his identity, he learned medical practice from his uncle and obtained Indian identity documents under the name Amit Kumar.
After his uncle’s death in 2022, he destroyed his Bangladeshi passport and began working in different places using forged documents. In recent months, he had been operating the Bengali clinic in Selaqui. The investigation is ongoing, he added.
