Ongoing board exams affect Holi plans of youngsters

With Holi falling in the middle of the board examination schedule on March 4, many class X and XII students in Doon are planning to mark the festival quietly this year as they prepare for key papers in mathematics, science and accountancy.
Several households plan to observe the festival of colour and fun in moderation this year due to the exams. “Holi comes every year for me, but board exams don’t,” said class X student Anukriti Sharma, who has decided to avoid stepping out with friends. “I’ll apply a little colour at home and get back to revision,” she said.
Others are trying to strike a balance. Class XII student Advika Kavi said that she plans to spend a couple of hours with family before returning to her books. “A short break helps clear the mind, but I can’t afford to lose focus,” she added.
Another student Rohan Mehra says that for him, Holi is all about Gujiya, Thandai and chips, which he says he will still enjoy.
Parents say the shift is practical. “We’re not cancelling Holi, just keeping it simple,” said Radhika Kavi, whose daughter has an upcoming science paper. “This is an important stage for them,” she said.
Teachers also acknowledge the pressure. School principal Nidhika Gurung said that the students often feel anxious about losing study time during exam week. “Even one day feels significant when papers are lined up back-to-back,” she said, adding that moderation is the key.
Board examinations remain a critical milestone, influencing subject streams and higher education options. This year in Dehradun, many students are choosing discipline over distraction, marking Holi briefly before returning to preparation.
