Clear existing footpaths and make more, say Doon residents

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun
Residents of Dehradun city have raised concerns about the insufficient number of footpaths and the encroachments on the existing footpaths in the city. They pointed out that as traffic congestion has increased over time, so has the necessity for dedicated walkways to ensure pedestrian safety. Further, they emphasised that the administration should not only work on establishing more footpaths but also ensure that existing ones are free from encroachments and primarily serve their intended purpose for pedestrians.
It is worth noting that The Pioneer had earlier reported on the concerns of citizens regarding waterlogging on city roads during the monsoon season. In relation to this, residents have stated that the lack of footpaths also forces pedestrians to navigate through waterlogged roads when footpaths are in a comparatively better condition though encroached upon.
Local resident Gungun Mehta said that while the administration in Dehradun has aimed to develop the city into a Smart City, these efforts seem largely theoretical. She pointed out that issues like waterlogging persist and other problems remain unchanged. Further, she said that the scarcity of footpaths in the city contributes to accidents, as pedestrians are forced to walk on the main roads meant for vehicles. Mehta emphasised that the administration should create a plan to establish footpaths that are free from encroachments.
“I am 63-years-old and I typically enjoy walking to the market. However, I’ve noticed that walking in Dehradun has become challenging. The increase in traffic congestion, coupled with the limited number of footpaths and encroachment on existing footpaths, makes it difficult for individuals in my age group to walk comfortably. The lack of footpaths often forces me to walk on the main roads, where I encounter aggressive driving and other potential dangers,” said an elderly person, Krishna Lal.
He emphasised that authorities should develop a plan to create accessible footpaths for pedestrians. The establishment of more footpaths in the city is currently a significant demand.
Apart from this, many students have expressed their concerns regarding the insufficient number of footpaths, which puts their safety at risk while walking on the roads to and from school. Student Ritik Anand said that he usually walks to and from school by himself. He said that walking in Dehradun has become challenging due to traffic congestion and waterlogging during the monsoon season. He emphasised the importance of having more footpaths, stating that their scarcity not only complicates walking but can also endanger lives.
Many citizens also pointed out that many of the existing footpaths are encroached upon either by shopkeepers or occupied by vehicles parked due to lack of proper parking spaces in the city. In areas like Paltan Bazaar where the shoppers are expected to walk, the level of encroachment is such that it becomes difficult to walk even on the main road, the locals said.
