Congress questions Dhami govt on anti-religious conversion law

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun

The Uttarakhand Congress chief spokesperson Garima Dasauni has said that the anti-religious conversion law introduced by the BJP government with much fanfare has proven to be hollow.

She said that the data of the government shows that a total of 62 FIRs were registered in such cases and out of them only five cases reached the courts. In all the five cases, the courts exonerated all the accused. The Congress spokesperson said that the above mentioned facts speak volumes of lackadaisical attitude of the Pushkar Singh Dhami government, weak investigation and pathetic law and order situation in the State.  She said that the government should answer as to why not even in a single case the accused were found guilty.

“Are forced or organised religious conversions indeed a serious problem in Uttarakhand? Were the police and prosecution deliberately weakened, or was this entire law merely a tool for communal appeasement and political polarisation,’’ she asked.

Dasauni claimed that the Dhami government had claimed that the law will be historic but it has been proven that it used this law not to ensure justice, but to divide society, intimidate a particular section and gain electoral advantage.

She said that the people of Uttarakhand have understood the truth that the anti-religious conversion law which the BJP government introduced with much publicity was merely a political gimmick.
