Cyber experts warn parents about online gaming traps for children

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE / Dehradun

Cyber security experts have warned parents about the growing risks of online gaming, especially games that use ‘Mystery Boxes’ and ‘Exclusive Rewards’ to attract children. The Special Task Force, senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said many children are being tempted to spend money on in-game purchases without understanding the consequences.

He said online games often offer limited-time rewards and special items that encourage players to make quick purchases. Children can easily fall into this trap and start spending money through small transactions. Over time, these repeated purchases can lead to financial losses and unhealthy gaming habits.

“Such gaming features can create gambling-like behaviour among children and may also affect their mental health,” Singh said. Children who spend excessive time on games may become stressed, anxious or irritable. In many cases, parents become aware of the problem only after noticing unexpected charges in their bank accounts.

The cyber experts advised parents to closely monitor their children’s gaming activities and watch for any sudden changes in behaviour. They have also urged parents to secure their bank accounts, credit and debit cards, and UPI applications by enabling biometric authentication or PIN protection. This can help prevent children from making accidental or unauthorised payments.

Singh advised parents to encourage children to take regular breaks from gaming and spend time on other activities. If a child appears stressed or emotionally affected by gaming, parents should intervene and provide support.
