If things go as planned, areas of Haridwar city may be rid of water logging experienced every year during the monsoon. The Irrigation department has prepared a storm water drainage plan amounting to Rs 45 crore to resolve water logging at Ranipur Mod and Bhagat Singh Chowk areas of the city.
According to official sources, the Irrigation secretary has found the report of the departmental financial committee correct in principle. Considering this, if all the official procedures are completed on time, this important project may be launched before the onset of the next monsoon.
It is pertinent to mention here that despite being one of the major destinations in Uttarakhand visited by both pilgrims and tourists, Haridwar continues to face water logging during the monsoon and various other civic woes which disrupt routine life and cause inconvenience to visitors. Haridwar district magistrate Mayur Dixit has been making efforts to resolve these by pursuing the matter at the administration level. The result of these efforts might be visible in the near future.
According to Irrigation department officials, a modern water drainage line will be developed from Bhagat Singh Chowk to Ranipur Mod under this scheme. A chamber will be built at Gyan Godari near Premnagar bridge and connected with the line. The water from here will be sent to Kankhal as silt reject. The completion of this project is expected to resolve the long standing problem of water logging at Bhagat Singh Chowk, Ranipur Mod and other nearby areas during the monsoon.
