More than two years after land subsidence first hit Jyotirmath, the affected locals have submitted a memorandum addressed to chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami demanding prompt and effective action to address the situation and problems still being faced by the locals.
The memorandum submitted by the Joshimath Bachao Sangharsh Samiti to the sub-divisional magistrate stated that about two and a half years after land subsidence first hit Jyotirmath, the major demands including resettlement of the affected families, compensation and other issues have not been acted upon with the disaster affected families still waiting for rehabilitation.
The government has not taken any action despite the locals repeatedly raising issues including value of the affected land, value of commercial buildings, PMAY and other issues affecting the disaster-affected directly. The Sangharsh Samiti has listed seven major demands including fixing the compensation for commercial damage caused by the disaster as per the discussion held between the committee and chief minister and fixing the value of the land to speed up rehabilitation of the affected persons and selection of the land for resettlement of the affected families.
The ban on construction in the area following the disaster has caused a major problem for the locals and considering this there should be a uniform rule for governmental and private constructions, the committee said. With stabilisation and safety work not being completed for Jyotirmath, the locals further demanded that a transparent detailed project report for the safety of the town should be implemented. Local unemployed persons should be given priority for working in such works, they said. Joshimath Bachao Sangharsh Samiti coordinator Atul Sati and others were also present on the occasion.
