PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun
Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Ganesh Godiyal has said that the State government should bring a resolution to protect the Assembly constituencies of the mountainous parts of the State in the next delimitation.
He said that it is expected the tenure of current delimitation could be terminated prematurely and new delimitation of Lok Sabha and State legislative assemblies will be done after 2027. He said that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP government have assured that that to provide 33 per cent reservation to women in the parliament and State legislative assemblies, the number of seats in Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and State legislative assemblies will be increased proportionately and for this new delimitation of the constituencies will be done. Godiyal said that it is very likely that after the new delimitation, the number of Lok Sabha seats in Uttarakhand will increase from existing five to seven. Similarly the State is likely to get one more Rajya Sabha seat and it is expected that 21 more constituencies will be added, increasing the strength of Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha to 91.
The PCC president in such a situation where the new delimitation of constituencies is likely after 2027, serious discussions in the society on the delimitation and its effect on the State should be held. He said that earnest efforts are needed to ensure that the number of Assembly seats in the mountainous areas are not reduced in the State. Godiyal demanded that the State government should bring a proposal during the upcoming Vidhan Sabha session at Bharadisain in Gairsain on the process adopted for the new delimitation. He said that a formula should be discussed and decided for protecting the Vidhan Sabha constituencies. Godiyal said that the proposal should be sent to the Union government to protect the interests of the people of mountainous areas.
