First responder training held in Dehradun to reduce road accident casualties

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

Considering the rising number of road accidents in Dehradun and the need to reduce human casualties after such incidents, the Transport department organised a training programme to prepare volunteers, students and drivers as first responders.

The training took place under the supervision of regional transport officer of Dehradun division (Enforcement and Road Safety) Anita Chamola. A total of 68 participants from ARTO offices in Dehradun, Rishikesh and Vikasnagar also joined the programme.

Doctors conducted the training and explained how timely medical assistance during the first hour after an accident, also known as the golden hour, can prevent up to 90 per cent of fatalities. Participants were trained in providing immediate help to accident victims, including methods to control bleeding, secure the injured person and administer CPR if necessary.

Chamola said that the department aims to create a database of trained first responders who can assist victims before emergency services arrive. The teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) also provided insights on handling accidents in remote hilly areas with limited resources. MLA Savita Kapoor also addressed the participants and emphasised that helping accident victims is a form of true public service.

She urged for more awareness programmes to reduce accidents. The department also distributed first-aid kits and utility bags to the participants.
