The Transport Department seized illegal vehicle accessories from shops near Tehsil Chowk and Prince Chowk in Dehradun on Saturday afternoon. The action was taken on the directions of regional transport officer (Administration) Sandeep Saini to minimise this cause of accidents in the city. He informed that a team led by assistant regional transport officer Chakrapani Mishra, along with transport officer Pragya Panth and others inspected the shops and confiscated reflective tapes, multi-tone horns, fancy lights and unauthorised number plates that did not comply with prescribed standards.
Saini said that notices are being issued to the shopkeepers and action has been initiated against them under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. The RTO said that such accessories are prohibited as they pose serious road safety risks. Multi-tone horns contribute to noise pollution and confuse other drivers, while non-standard lights and reflective materials can impair visibility and distract motorists.
Unauthorised number plates make it difficult to identify vehicles in case of violations or accidents. Saini said that the department will continue conducting such surprise inspections to curb the use of such items and prevent accidents caused by non-compliant vehicle modifications.
