A man from Malookawala village in Dehradun has allegedly been cheated of more than Rs 30 lakh in a cyber-fraud case. As per the complaint filed at the Vikasnagar police station, the victim Vinod Kumar said that he had received a phone call on January 5 from a person claiming to be an officer of the Reserve Bank of India. He, as per the complaint, had told Kumar that some money related to a policy had been pending in his name and it could be released after he paid certain taxes and charges.

The caller later contacted him allegedly from different mobile numbers and asked him to deposit money in different bank accounts. Trusting the caller, Kumar transferred money in several instalments from his bank accounts to different bank accounts, the complaint runs. The ‘officer’ kept asking for more money, saying that the policy amount was large and more deposits were needed for tax and bond formalities.

The complaint further said that the victim had deposited about Rs 30.79 lakh between January 7 and January 28. However later when he tried to contact the ‘officer’ on January 31 to ask about the policy payment, the phone was found switched off. Realising that he had been cheated, the victim filed a complaint with the bank and later approached police.

Police said they have received the complaint and started an investigation.
