Notorious gangster Vinay Tyagi succumbed to injuries during treatment in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rishikesh on Saturday morning. He was shot three times on the Haridwar-Laksar highway while being transported by the police to a court hearing on Wednesday. His family members have alleged a conspiracy behind his killing and also accused AIIMS of negligence in treatment, though the institute has rejected the claims.

According to doctors, Tyagi had sustained three bullet wounds. One of the bullets had entered from the chest and damaged the intestines. Blood loss and the seriousness of the wounds resulted in his death at about 7:30 AM on Wednesday. Tyagi was being transported by the police on Wednesday afternoon from the Roorkee jail to the court in Laksar. Taking advantage of traffic congestion on the Haridwar-Laksar highway, two men on a motorcycle approached the police vehicle and shot the gangster. Tyagi sustained serious injuries while two policemen were also injured in the shooting. The police started searching for the shooters and arrested Sunny Yadav and Ajay Kumar from the woods in Khanpur area on Thursday. According to the police, the main accused Yadav used to work for Tyagi in the past and the duo had a dispute regarding a sum of Rs 20 lakh. Yadav and his accomplice shot Tyagi due to this old financial dispute, the police said.

On the other hand, Tyagi’s family have questioned the claims of the police. Alleging a bigger conspiracy in the case, they claimed that Tyagi had named an influential contractor from Uttar Pradesh who had allegedly hidden hundreds of crores in cash and gold at the home of a doctor friend in Dehradun. This is the reason why Tyagi was framed and sent to jail before being killed, his family members alleged. Meanwhile, rejecting claims of any gaps in the treatment, the AIIMS Rishikesh administration said that the best possible treatment was provided to the injured man but the injuries were very serious and turned out to be fatal. The police said that the matter will be investigated in detail on the basis of the post mortem report, CCTV camera footage, call details and other evidence.
