Though the official data shows that a large number of complaints have been registered in 2023 related to child pornography through the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), no FIR has been registered while investigation is going on in as many as 88 cases.
Notably, the Special Task Force (STF) receives these complaints through the NCMEC tip line. The information is first sent to the nodal agency- Cyber Crime Prevention against Children (CCPS). Thereafter, these complaints are forwarded to the districts and police stations concerned.
The senior superintendent of police, STF, Navneet Singh Bhullar, however, said that each complaint is carefully examined at the local level. “Police verify the information and try to find a complainant or collect supporting evidence. If any substance is found during the investigation, an FIR is registered and further legal action is taken,” he stated.
Bhullar further said that the investigation process is going on in all pending cases. “We will not spare anyone found involved in child pornography. We take strict action once sufficient evidence is found as we view child pornography as a heinous crime and treat them with utmost seriousness,” he declared.
