Health experts suggest precautions for pilgrims

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

Given the ongoing Char Dham Yatra in the State, medical professionals have advised pilgrims to take necessary precautions before undertaking the pilgrimage. These include carrying essential medicines and undergoing medical check-ups prior to travel.

The advisory comes as pilgrims travelling to the high-altitude Char Dham sites frequently experience health issues such as breathing difficulties, in some cases vomiting and diarrhoea. Medical experts have particularly urged individuals with pre-existing conditions like hypertension, diabetes and other ailments to ensure they take adequate precautions before embarking on the Yatra.

The Principal Medical Superintendent (PMS) at Deen Dayal Upadhyay District Hospital Dr Manu Jain emphasised the importance of taking necessary precautions for pilgrims participating in the ongoing Char Dham Yatra. He said that due to the high altitude, there is an increased risk of heart issues and breathing difficulties among pilgrims. It is crucial for all pilgrims, particularly those aged above 40, to adhere to safety measures. Jain advised that before embarking on the Char Dham Yatra, individuals should consult their doctors, undergo a health check, and ensure they are fit for travel. The health camps are strategically placed along the Yatra route for those who may encounter any health issues, the PMS noted.

“During the Char Dham Yatra, pilgrims typically embark on a journey lasting from two to five days. Many travellers already suffer from conditions such as high blood pressure and respiratory issues and when they neglect to take their medications or consume outside food during the trek, it can exacerbate their health problems. Further, individuals travelling at high altitudes may experience symptoms like fatigue, vomiting and diarrhoea from prolonged outdoor dining,” said, a former district hospital PMS Dr VS Chauhan.

He said that in the past, while he was deployed to provide services during the Yatra, he observed that people suffering from the ailments often did not bring their medication. It is advised that pilgrims who are already dealing with health issues carry their medications with them. Along the Yatra route, they should utilise the health camps that are set up for check-ups and individuals may also consider bringing portable oxygen pumps during the journey. Chauhan emphasised that pilgrims should also ensure they eat from hygienic sources during the Yatra.
