Medical officers’ training for Char Dham Yatra begins in Srinagar

To enhance health services for the pilgrims during the high-altitude Char Dham Yatra, a two-day training programme for medical officers commenced at Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali (VCSG) Government Medical College, Srinagar on Wednesday. This initiative- directed by the State Health minister Dhan Singh Rawat- aims at protecting the pilgrims from various high-altitude-related health issues. 

Medical officers serving at community health centres (CHC) and primary health centres (PHC) located along the Kedarnath and Badrinath routes are receiving specialised training imparted  by senior doctors from the medical college.

Under the guidance of the principal of Government Medical College, Srinagar, Dr Ashutosh Sayana, nursing officers, doctors and emergency staff have already undergone initial training while the medical officers participated in the second phase that started on Wednesday.

The head of the department of General Medicine of the medical college in Srinagar and the training’s nodal officer, Dr K S Butola said that the participating doctors had been receiving comprehensive insights into the unique challenges posed by high altitudes and they were being trained on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as acute mountain sickness, high altitude pulmonary edema and cerebral edema. Additionally, they were trained on managing patients with shortness of breath, seizures, diabetes complications and acute gastroenteritis.
