Doon to get Uttarakhand’s first electric animal crematorium

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is set to develop Uttarakhand’s first electric animal crematorium, a long-awaited civic initiative aimed at providing a dignified, organised and environmentally friendly facility for the disposing of the bodies of pets. None of the 13 districts in Uttarakhand had a dedicated or systematic arrangement for animal cremation so far. As a result, pet owners often face difficulties after the death of their pets with limited and unregulated options available for burying or cremating their deceased pets. The new facility is expected to bring much-needed relief to residents.

According to MCD officials, the electric animal crematorium will be developed on municipal land in the Daudwala area, near Mothrowala in Dehradun. All necessary administrative and technical approvals have been obtained and construction work is expected to commence shortly. The facility will use electric cremation technology, which is considered cleaner and more sustainable than traditional methods.

The municipal commissioner Namami Bansal said that the project is aimed at ensuring respectful and humane disposal of animal remains while also minimising environmental impact. She added that the use of electricity for cremation will help reduce air pollution and prevent improper disposal practices. The decision has been welcomed by animal lovers and welfare activists across the city.

Animal welfare activist Anupama said the centre would provide emotional and practical support to pet owners and encourage responsible practices. The upcoming facility is being viewed as an important civic milestone for Dehradun. It is expected not only to improve animal welfare services but also to strengthen the city’s commitment to environmentally sustainable urban development.
