Investigative report raises questions over NEET security processes

An investigative report has raised questions regarding examination security arrangements for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), prompting calls for an independent inquiry into the role of a private service provider, INNOVATIVEVIEW, in various aspects of the examination process.

According to the report, the company has been associated with several security-related functions for NEET since the National Testing Agency (NTA) was established in 2017. These functions reportedly include CCTV surveillance, biometric verification, frisking, candidate identification and other examination security services.

The report questions whether the repeated award of such sensitive contracts followed a transparent and competitive tendering process. It also raises issues about whether independent audits were conducted to periodically assess the effectiveness and integrity of the security systems. These claims have not been independently verified.

Another issue highlighted in the report relates to biometric verification. It alleges that at certain examination centres, candidates whose biometric authentication could not be completed were reportedly permitted to appear for the examination after submitting a “Concern Form.” The report suggests that, if accurate, such practices could warrant closer scrutiny of examination protocols. However, no official finding has established that any irregularity resulted from this process.

The report further claims that the company later received assignments through the government-owned Educational Consultants India Limited (EDCIL). It argues that the circumstances surrounding these arrangements merit examination to determine whether they enhanced transparency and accountability. No official conclusion has been announced on this matter.

The controversy comes amid heightened public concern over the integrity of competitive examinations, particularly NEET, which serves as the gateway to undergraduate medical education for millions of aspirants across the country.

Education experts have consistently emphasised that maintaining the credibility of high-stakes examinations requires robust security mechanisms, transparent procurement processes and regular independent oversight. Any perception of weakness in these systems can undermine public confidence and affect students who invest years preparing for such examinations.

As questions continue to be raised, there have been calls from various quarters for a comprehensive and independent review of the allegations. Such an inquiry, if undertaken, could help establish the facts, address public concerns and reinforce confidence in the country’s examination system.

The National Testing Agency, EDCIL and the company named in the report would have the opportunity to respond to the allegations in the course of any official inquiry. At present, the claims remain allegations reported by the investigative report and have not been confirmed by any competent authority.
