Wanted criminal Sunil Kumar alias Sunil Kapoor (36) shot himself with his licensed revolver during a joint police operation in Lakshman Chowk, Dehradun on Sunday.
The operation was carried out by Haridwar Police and Haryana Police with the support of Dehradun Police after they received information that he was hiding at a relative’s house in the city, the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said. He informed that the police surrounded the location and asked him to surrender. Instead, he fired at himself and died on the spot. The incident came a day after Kapoor had shot Haryana Crime Branch sub-inspector Surendra at Haridwar Roadways bus stand on Saturday.
The officer was reportedly attempting to arrest him when Kapoor opened fire, hitting him in the stomach and hand. Singh informed that after the shooting, Haryana and Haridwar Police launched a search for Kapoor, who was facing several criminal cases.
During the search, his presence in Dehradun was confirmed, leading to the coordinated operation. After he shot himself, forensic team was called to the site in Lakshman Chowk to conduct photography, videography and evidence collection. Singh also inspected the location and briefed officials on the sequence of events. The body was later sent for postmortem after completing legal procedures.
The SSP informed that Kapoor was a resident of Mohalla Bajran Jind district in Haryana. He was wanted in multiple cases, including attempt to culpable homicide, extortion, cheating and offences under the Information Technology Act. Cases against him were registered in Haryana and Haridwar. All legal formalities are being completed and further investigation is underway, Singh said.
