The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has been collecting about 150 metric tonnes of extra waste daily during the festive season since October 11. The Dehradun municipal commissioner Namami Bansal said that around 702.2 tonnes of additional garbage have been collected from across Dehradun since October 11 during the ongoing festive season.
The corporation has been conducting a special cleanliness drive from October 11 in view of Deepawali, Chhath Puja and other upcoming festivals. The initiative aims to manage the sharp increase in waste generation across residential and commercial areas during this period.
She informed that an average of 100 to 150 metric tonnes of extra waste is being collected daily from different parts of the city. The corporation has deployed additional tractors, trolleys and vehicles to ensure that garbage collection continues without disruption. To support the extended operations, extra fuel has been provided to waste collection vehicles, enabling multiple trips across wards each day. Separate arrangements have been made for green waste collection, with five tractor-trolleys operating daily for this purpose, Bansal said.
She stated that waste gathered during the drive is being transported to the Sheeshambada transfer station and processing plant for treatment and disposal. Rasha Infrastructure, the firm managing the Kargi material transfer station and the Sheeshambada processing facility, has been directed to operate in two shifts to handle the additional waste load effectively.
Bansal has instructed all officials concerned to maintain constant supervision of cleanliness in their respective wards and ensure that garbage is removed promptly. The special cleanliness campaign will remain in operation until Chhath Puja to ensure that waste generated during Deepawali and subsequent festivities is managed efficiently and that citywide sanitation is maintained, she added.
