PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The Municipal Corporation Dehradun (MCD) has implemented a sanitation management initiative assigning women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) registered under the National Urban Livelihood Mission to collect door-to-door garbage collection user charges across the city.

Out of 100 wards, women’s SHGs are managing fee collection in 57 wards. Assistant municipal commissioner Rajveer Singh Chauhan said that from July to September last year, over Rs 63 lakh was collected during the initial phase and from October to December, they have collected almost Rs 20 lakh. The quarterly system has streamlined operations and improved transparency, he added.

As part of the revenue-sharing model, 25 per cent of the total profit is directly distributed among the participating women’s SHGs, providing them with a stable source of income and promoting financial independence.

The municipal commissioner Namami Bansal said that the initiative, launched under the guidance of chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has improved revenue collection and strengthened administrative efficiency. She added that timely fee collection has enhanced sanitation management across wards.

Women beneficiaries are also happy with the initiative. Seema Bisht, a member of an SHG from Nehrugram, said that the scheme has generated meaningful employment opportunities and financial stability for women.
