Doctors here have advised that parents should administer cough syrup to their children only after consulting medical professionals. This recommendation comes in light of recent reports of child fatalities in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, linked to cough syrup consumption. Doctors expressed concern and emphasised the importance of seeking medical advice rather than resorting to self-medication and giving cough syrup without proper guidance.
The authorities in Uttarakhand have recently implemented restrictions on the sale of cough syrups containing dextromethorphan and chlorpheniramine maleate combined with phenylephrine hydrochloride for children under the age of four.
Senior paediatrician at Deen Dayal Upadhyay District Hospital Dr Neetu Tomar expressed her concerns regarding the incidents in question. She emphasised that when prescribing cough syrup, she carefully assesses whether it will be beneficial or pose risks.
According to her, age is not the only factor to consider; parents must seek medical advice before giving any cough syrup to their children. A doctor can determine the suitability of the medication for the child’s specific age and recommend the appropriate dosage. Tomar warned that failing to consult a healthcare professional could result in kidney damage and other health issues for the child.
Paediatrician at Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, Dr Vishal Kaushik stated that based on government recommendations, infants under the age of two should not be given cough syrup, as the ailment typically resolves on its own at this stage. He further said that for children over two years old, it is advisable for parents to consult a doctor instead of resorting to self-medication or seeking guidance from a chemist.
The doctor can determine whether cough syrup is appropriate and the correct dosage. Failing to do so may result in serious health issues and complications. He stressed that when prescribing cough syrup, doctors like him always prioritise treatments that offer greater benefits and lower risks.
