Police arrested a man for trying to run over police personnel during a late night checking drive near Lal Tappad in Doiwala. The incident took place on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday on the National Highway when a police team was checking vehicles coming from Haridwar to Dehradun.

Police officials said that a team from Kotwali Doiwala was conducting routine checking as part of a special verification drive ordered by senior officers. Barricades were placed on the road and officers were stopping vehicles for inspection. When a black BMW car was signalled to stop, the driver suddenly sped up and rammed into the police barricade. The police personnel narrowly escaped, though injured.

According to police, the driver then swerved the car and sped again at high speed towards the officers with the alleged intention to kill them. The car hit the barricades and rammed into two police officers- sub-inspector Raghuveer Kaprwan and assistant sub-inspector Manoj Kumar. Both officers were seriously injured. The vehicle also crashed into other cars which had already been stopped for checking, causing heavy damage.

The police team quickly overpowered the driver and took him into custody. The accused has been identified as Tarun (33), a resident of Bijnor district of Uttar Pradesh. The injured officers were rushed to Himalayan Hospital in Jolly Grant, where they are receiving treatment.

Police have registered a case against the accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for attempt to murder, obstructing government work and damaging government property. The accused was later medically examined.
