The agitating advocates, demanding immediate construction of advocates’ chambers, staged a chakka jam and sit-in at Clock Tower on Monday which plunged into severe traffic chaos. The police were seen struggling to manage the traffic and the crowd. The police stated that no permission had been taken for the protest and warned that action would be taken against them according to the law. The chakka jam stir continued for about two hours.
According to president of Dehradun Bar Association, Manmohan Kandwal, the stir had been staged over the issue advocates’ chambers with the government remaining unresponsive.
Kandwal further warned of bigger agitations in future. “We blocked the Clock Tower today. Our next stirs will be held at the Secretariat and chief minister’s residence. We may even take it to the Assembly during a session. If things warrant, we will barge into the Assembly, defying police,” he said.
With traffic having come to a complete standstill in the Clock Tower area, the common people had to remain stuck in vehicles. Altercations erupted between the agitators and the common people. “The advocates remained unperturbed while our ordeal on the roads continued,” a commuter said.
