Repeated complaints unheeded, MDDA Housing struggles for basic facilities

HASAN HADI /Dehradun

Residents of the MDDA Housing Society near ISBT keep facing serious problems due to the lack of basic facilities. The society has 338 flats and 252 families are currently living there. Despite this, people are grappling with water shortage, mostly in summer; non-functioning lifts and safety issues.

The residents say that there is no proper playground for the children. “Besides, the swimming is dry,” one of them complained.

The water problem becomes quite serious during the summer season. “Water supply often stops when we need it the most, during the scorching summer days.   We have repeatedly written to Jal Sansthan for a separate borewell, but no action has been taken so far,” said a senior functionary of the Residents Welfare Association.  He further said that the society has 10 blocks with two lifts in each block. “Presently, only eight are working. We wrote to the MDDA multiple times, but to no avail,” he rued.

There is also a major safety concern around the electrical room of the society. An 11,000-volt power line passes through the room and during the rainy season, when water enters the risk of electric shock increases manifolds. Residents say that a major accident could happen any time. “This serious issue has remained unaddressed despite repeated complaints made,” one of the residents lamented.

According to the president of Residents Welfare Association, Deshraj Kandwal, more than 100 complaints have been sent to MDDA and Jal Sansthan since July 2024.  “But they are yet to sit up and act,” he said.   The secretary Mahavir Singh Rawat echoed the view, saying that the complex has no proper parking space either. “We wonder when MDDA will come out of their hibernation and address our long-pending grievances. We are really tired of pleading with them in vain,” he said.
