The doctors of the Mahant Indiresh Hospital here have claimed to have successfully removed one of the largest bone tumours recorded so far in the State from a patient suffering from bone cancer (osteosarcoma).

The senior cancer surgeon of the hospital, Dr Ajit Tiwari informed that the patient was suffering from a serious form of bone cancer known as osteosarcoma. After detailed investigations and multidisciplinary discussions at the hospital, the medical team decided to perform limb-salvage surgery. “Due to the extremely large size of the tumour, the likelihood of amputation was very high, making the surgery exceptionally challenging. Prior to this, the patient had consulted several major cancer hospitals, where it was conveyed that the disease had progressed extensively and surgery was not feasible, leaving chemotherapy as the only option,’’ he said.

Dr Tiwari said that the patient was given chemotherapy under the supervision of Dr Rachit Ahuja and Dr Debanjan, which helped in controlling the disease. After the chemotherapy, the complex surgery was successfully performed on the patient. Following the surgery, the patient’s condition has been steadily improving. All sutures have been removed and the patient has now begun walking independently, Dr Tiwari claimed.
