Smart City residents bogged down by waterlogging demand solution

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

Residents of the provisional State capital Dehradun voiced their concerns about the issue of waterlogging in the city which has become an annual feature of the monsoon in the Smart City. The locals face traffic congestion and several other issues which disrupt routine life in the city, which the authorities have largely failed to resolve so far. Considering this, Doonites have once again called on the authorities to ensure the effective implementation of the drainage system in Dehradun, rather than limiting it to mere documentation.

With the onset of the monsoon rains, certain areas in Dehradun including areas experience waterlogging every year, creating difficulties for both residents and commuters traveling through these locations. “The issue of waterlogging during the monsoon season remains consistent each year. I have noticed that the roads in Dehradun become inundated due to the lack of a proper drainage system. With the current recurring monsoon rains lasting for a few days, waterlogging has started to occur in several areas of Dehradun. In the afternoons, when I go to pick up my children from school, it becomes nearly impossible for me to drive due to the poor visibility of the roads. I believe that the local authorities should not treat this as just a formality; they need to take a serious look at the situation and implement a drainage plan, especially in the areas most affected by waterlogging,” said resident Pravesh Rawat.

Local resident Ritu Bhandari also voiced her concerns about the waterlogging problem in the city. She said that the heavy rains during the monsoon lead to water pooling outside her home, sometimes even flowing into the house. She stated that the issue of waterlogging has escalated beyond just water entering homes; the presence of dirty water also contributes to various health problems. She stressed that authorities need to take action on this matter instead of shifting blame or responsibilities to one another.

The school students also expressed their concerns about the challenges they encounter while going to and returning from school due to waterlogging. School student Riya Sahni said that she typically walks home from school with friends. However, during the monsoon, she often faces issues with waterlogging as the roads, covered in dirty water, can ruin her school uniform. Additionally, this situation makes it difficult for her to return home. She suggested that authorities develop a plan to prevent waterlogging before the onset of the monsoon season.
