Solani breaches embankment, situation under control after repairs

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/Haridwar

A portion of the embankment of Solani river broke in the Khanpur area of Haridwar district on Saturday evening as the river swelled following consistent rains in the mountainous and plain regions of the State in recent days. The embankment near Hastamoli village gave way to rising waters which resulted in the water entering residential and agricultural areas.

The Laksar sub divisional magistrate Saurav Aswal and Tehsildar Pratap Singh Chauhan reached the site on Saturday night and mechanical excavators were deployed to start repairing the breached embankment in the night. The authorities managed to temporarily repair the embankment though the river is still swollen.

The SDM said that the situation is presently under control and the embankment has been repaired. However, the situation is being monitored constantly due to the possible danger. Flood posts have been alerted while the villagers have been requested to ignore rumours and to remain in touch with the administration.

Meanwhile, locals informed that water from the Solani flooded farms in Dhadheki, Mathana, Mohammadpur, Sahipur, Jogawala and Gordhanpur villages. The villagers claimed that agricultural land spread across many bighas were submerged, damaging sugarcane, paddy and fodder prepared for cattle.

With the rains continuing, the local administration has also issued an alert, making announcements in the villages. The villagers have been asked to remain alert.
