To improve disaster management and provide timely information during emergencies, the Dehradun district administration has started using high-tech cameras to monitor disaster-prone areas and major tourist spots.
The district administration said that high-definition Pan, Tilt and Zoom (PTZ) cameras have been installed at several locations, including Karlygaad, Sahastradhara and Guchhupani. The cameras will provide around-the-clock, real time monitoring of these areas. The camera feed is available at the District Disaster Management Control Room.
The administration is also installing a PTZ camera at Maldevta. Officials will use the cameras to keep a close watch on water levels and other unusual activities. The system can help officials detect a possible danger at an early stage.
The Dehradun district magistrate Ashish Chauhan said that in the first phase, cameras have already been installed at Karlygaad, a disaster sensitive area of Sahastradhara. He said Sahastradhara, Maldevta and Guchhupani attract a large number of tourists, so their safety is also being monitored through the new system.
He said the technology will help officials respond faster during heavy rain and other emergencies. It will provide early information and help officials start rescue and relief operations quickly. The cameras will also help monitor the safety of tourists at these popular destinations, the DM said.
