Transport department records 33 per cent rise in challaned vehicles across Dehradun division

Even as road traffic accidents caused mainly by violation of traffic rules remain a major concern in the State, the Transport department has recorded a 33 per cent increase in challaned vehicles in Dehradun division that includes Dehradun, Vikasnagar, Rishikesh, Roorkee, Haridwar, Tehri and Uttarkashi, during April to August 2025 compared to the same period last year. Data released by the department shows that 62,509 vehicles were challaned this year, up from 46,885 last year.
The regional transport officer (Enforcement) of Dehradun division Anita Chamola stated that the number of seized vehicles rose by 24 per cent, from 2,712 in 2024–25 to 3,377 in 2025–26. The increase in challaned and seized vehicles resulted in a revenue collection of Rs 9.52 crore this year against Rs 7.75 crore last year, reflecting a growth of 22 per cent.
She stated that Tehri recorded the highest rise in challaned vehicles at 144 per cent compared to last year, while Rishikesh showed the highest growth in penalty collection at 70 per cent. According to her, enforcement teams including ARTOs, task force, Interceptor squads and bike squads carried out the action. Officials were directed to focus on irregular vehicles, issue challans and seize defaulter vehicles after issuing notices.
She said that vehicles with repeated violations will be blacklisted. She has also instructed officials concerned to strengthen field enforcement, ensure notice service through different squads and coordinate with police for effective legal action. The department will continue the enforcement drives in all subdivisions in the coming months, she added.
