Transport department seizes over 1,000 vehicles in drive against drunk and underage driving

The Transport department seized nearly 1,000 vehicles during an enforcement campaign against drunken driving and underage drivers in Dehradun division.
The campaign started on August 19 and covered Dehradun, Rishikesh, Vikasnagar, Roorkee, Haridwar and Tehri. It was conducted by enforcement squads, traffic police, interceptor teams and bike squads under the supervision of the regional transport officer (Enforcement) of Dehradun division Anita Chamola. These teams carried out the checks across multiple locations in the division in past six days. Chamola stated that enforcement teams checked over 1,000 vehicles during the campaign. They seized 133 vehicles for various violations.
Teams also issued challans to drivers for breaking traffic rules, including driving under the influence of alcohol and allowing underage persons to drive. Chamola informed that the enforcement teams checked 256 vehicles in Dehradun, 79 in Vikasnagar, 109 in Rishikesh, 199 in Haridwar, 197 in Roorkee, and 157 in Tehri. Out of these, officials issued 133 challans. They recorded 22 violations for drunk driving and 17 violations for underage driving. She informed that the department seized 22 vehicles and handed over the drivers to the police for further legal action. “Our teams also caught 17 underage drivers.
The department seized their vehicles and started issuing notices to their guardians. Further action will be taken against them accordingly,” she added. Chamola stated that the drive aimed to prevent accidents and ensure safer roads by curbing such practices. She stated that the enforcement officers led the campaign in each location with the support of police and interceptor teams. The department will continue such drives to reduce violations and promote discipline on the roads.
She stated that action against drunk and underage driving will remain a priority in the coming weeks. Future drives of the department will focus on monitoring highways and busy urban areas to prevent road accidents, Chamola added.
