The protection of wildlife is an integral part of Uttarakhand’s culture while conservation of the environment is part of the people’s values.and the environment is a legacy passed down the generations to the people of Uttarakhand, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said. He was speaking at the State-level Jan Van Mahotsav organised in Ramnagar as part of the State’s foundation silver jubilee celebrations on Thursday. Dhami stated that the women of Uttarakhand set an example for the world by participating in the Chipko Movement, risking their lives to protect the forests. “We have inherited this natural heritage because of their sacrifices,” he said.
The CM averred that the State is progressing toward development while maintaining harmony with its forests. “Modern technologies are being used to conserve forests while eco-tourism is providing employment to thousands of local youth,” he said. Referring to the Dhela rescue centre in Ramnagar, he called it the “AIIMS for wild animals,” adding that currently, 12 tigers and 13 leopards are being treated there. He also mentioned that people from across the country and abroad visit Corbett Park, which creates ample employment opportunities for local residents.
Forest minister Subodh Uniyal said, “Forests are our lifeline. While human-wildlife conflict is inevitable, the department is using new technologies to address this issue. The State government that “forests are our lifeline,” and while forest expansion is necessary, human-wildlife conflicts are inevitable. To address this, the department is working with new technologies. The compensation for the next of kin of those killed in human-wildlife conflict has also been increased from Rs six lakh to Rs 10 lakh,” he added.
During the event, responding to local MLA Diwan Singh Bisht’s request, the CM announced the installation of a light and sound system at Nagar Van. He also declared that basic facilities such as electricity, water and education will be provided in forest villages like Leti and Chopra.
