Women’s Day: Doon residents plan small gestures for loved ones

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun

A day before the International Women’s Day, many residents in Dehradun said that they were planning to celebrate in small but thoughtful ways, stating further that the women who have shaped their lives- mothers, sisters, colleagues, teachers and mentors-would receive warm  and grateful appreciation from them to mark the occasion.

Mulling simple surprises to spending time together, people in the capital said that the occasion offers a chance to acknowledge the supportive role these women have played in their lives.

Some youngsters from Doon told The Pioneer that they were planning personal gestures for family members. A working professional, Swati Rawat said that she plans to take her mother out for dinner by way of thanking her for her support and care for years. “I want to spend quality time with her and thank her for everything she has done for our family,” she said, adding that such occasions allow people to pause and recognise the sacrifices mothers make.

Students in the city say that the day is also an opportunity to appreciate women who inspire them in academic and personal life. Kuki Duarah and Harshit Maratha, college students in Dehradun, said that they plan to acknowledge the role of teachers and female friends who motivate them. “Our teachers and friends inspire us every day. I will be forever grateful to them for the knowledge I have gained and am gaining from our mentors from school to college,” Duarah said.

The working professionals this correspondent spoke to said that even small acts of recognition could have a meaningful impact. Sagar Chauhan, a city-based advocate, plans to take flowers and street food home to surprise his wife. “They deserve appreciation from family members they take care of. This is a day when they must be made to feel special,” he added.

Some said that this should not be made a one-off thing. Respect should be reflected daily through appreciative gestures at least. “Meaningful gestures go beyond gifts,” commented Sudarshan Chettri while Akriti Negi observed that   supporting women and acknowledging their efforts at home and workplaces shows real respect.
