Water supply in Dehradun to be normalised soon

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan (UJS) secretary (Appraisal)  Maneesh Semwal said that the restoration of the water supply systems which were affected in the recent spells of heavy rain in parts of Dehradun has been recently completed and with this normal water supply in the affected regions is expected to resume within one or two days.

It is important to mention that on September 16, Dehradun experienced heavy rainfall leading to flooding and landslides in some areas. As a result, 33 water supply schemes in the district were impacted that day. Among these, five to seven main schemes, which supply water to most parts of Dehradun, suffered significant damage. These include the supply scheme near Maldevta, which sources water from the Bandal River, as well as the Galogi power house and Shahanshahi Ashram, among others. The damage has caused considerable concern and anxiety among residents due to the reduced water supply.

Semwal stated that many residents have faced problems due to the damage to the water supply schemes. Of the 33 affected schemes, some are located in rural areas while the other is in urban areas. He also said that among these 33 schemes, five to seven are crucial, as they predominantly supplied water to a large number of residents in Dehradun.

Initially, when the water supply systems in Dehradun on September 16 were damaged, they restored it by connecting with older pipelines, which has somehow led to a decline in water availability. However, over time, the urban areas, including the main water supply schemes, have been restored recently with iron pipes and it is anticipated that water supply will return to normal within two to three days.

He said that the UJS has recently also acquired nine tankers from Haridwar to assist areas where water supply has been disrupted, ensuring that residents in those regions do not face difficulties. Semwal stressed that restoration efforts in rural areas affected by the water supply issues are in progress and will be completed soon. He said that UJS officials are regularly monitoring the work.
