Yoga panacea for rising stress among children, say experts

MANSI BHAMBRI | Dehradun

At a time when heightened competition in school days is increasing stress levels among children generally expected to enjoy a carefree childhood, experts have stated that practising Yoga can be useful in resolving stress and also help in improving their concentration.

Yogacharya and a volunteer at Parmarth Niketan in Rishikesh, Ganga Nandini said that various reasons contribute to stress in children. She pointed out that she has observed examinations, parental pressure to achieve high marks, digital overload and other factors contributing to this heightened stress, which can transform into depression over time. Parents must understand the negative impact of pressurising their children for good grades.

She further said that Yoga is regarded as a valuable tool and a precious gift for the society to address stress and anxiety. Children can significantly benefit from practicing Yoga, which is a natural method that helps stabilise the nervous system and improves coordination between the mind and body, ultimately enhancing their productivity.  Nandini advocated that children should begin practicing Yoga before entering their teenage years and that Yoga classes mandatory for all students in schools.

Further, parents and teachers should first embrace Yoga themselves to set a positive example for children. However, firstly, it is crucial for society and parents to expand their understanding of what Yoga truly encompasses.

Yoga expert from Patanjali in Haridwar, Radhika Nagrath said that over time, she has witnessed how the pressures of competition, exams and making the right career choices have increased fear, anxiety and stress among children. The age group most affected by these issues is between 12 and 17 years, where academic and career decisions play a crucial role. She opined that about 80 to 90 per cent children experience stress and anxiety, which can eventually lead to depression. To mitigate these effects and help children find purpose in their lives, she believes that Yoga is an effective solution to alleviate stress and depression stemming from academic and career pressures. She said practicing Yoga can foster a sense of happiness and help children manage their anxiety. She recommends that children engage in 20 minutes of Yoga every morning, incorporating techniques such as Kapalbhati, Anulom-Vilom and the 12 poses of Surya Namaskar. This will help keep the children energetic throughout the day, promote positive thinking and this will also assist them in making the right career decisions. She further suggested that in addition to sports, schools should incorporate Yoga classes for children. She also suggested that parents should also practice Yoga, setting an example for their children to follow regularly.

Nagrath expressed her concern, noting that she has observed girls aged 18 to 21 years experiencing menstrual imbalances due to career-related stress and other factors. Yoga could be an effective solution to these issues, she added.
