Police arrested five students of a private university in Premnagar area of Dehradun on charges of their involvement in a street fight and disturbing law and order in the area. The action was taken against the students after the police received a video showing a street fight and disturbance among some youths, the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said.

He stated that the Premnagar police were directed to identify the students seen in the video and take legal action accordingly. The police collected information and found that all five young men were BTech students of a private university.

The SSP informed that the police took them into custody and initiated legal proceedings. The police also called their families and conducted counselling sessions. A report was also sent to the university for further action, Singh said. He stated that during questioning, police found that the dispute started over borrowed money between two students. The disagreement escalated and other students joined the fight. All five involved were arrested.

The arrested students were identified as Shivam Kumar (21), Ayush Kumar (20) and Ujjwal Kumar (22) from Bihar and Madhur (22) from Rudrapur, Udham Singh Nagar. The authorities have witnessed a rise in the number of such incidents in the area. Considering this, police conducted surprise checks in 12 boys’ hostels and paying guest accommodations in the Bidhauli–Premnagar area on Wednesday.

The SSP informed that about 200 students were briefed and six hostel operators were fined Rs 60,000 under the Police Act for not verifying the occupants. Police instructed operators to appoint security guards and maintain entry-exit registers of students. Singh said that the police are taking all possible measures to ensure that such incidents do not repeat in the area. The police are also taking strict action against offenders too, he added.
