The chairperson of State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) Geeta Khanna said that many schools involve children in street rallies and meetings on the occasion of various events which puts their safety at risk and falls under the category of violation of the child’s right to safety and education. She said that many parents have also expressed their concern regarding such activities to the commission stating that many government and non-government schools involve children in rallies for various reasons including national events like Independence Day or Republic Day, or to raise awareness against social concerns like environment, sanitation and pollution among others.
Sometimes, they are also called on roads to welcome VIPs for which they have to wait for them for hours which is again violation of children’s rights, as per Khanna. She said that the school administrations should conduct such extra-curricular activities inside the school premises while ensuring children’s safety. She said that the Education department should also take this matter seriously and conduct workshops with schools to discuss these concerns. She said that she has also written letters to the State government and the Education department to take effective steps to ensure children’s safety and keeping their best interest in mind for their overall development.
