The Ministry of Home Affairs has chosen sub inspector Bhagwan Singh Mahar from Uttarakhand police for the Medal for Excellence in Investigation Award 2023. He has been selected for this honour for his contribution to cracking the sensational ‘honour’ killing case of Haridwar of May 2018 in which three men reportedly killed their sister for marrying against their will.

Two brothers Kuldeep and Arun along with their cousin Rahul brutally murdered their sister Preeti at her maternal uncle’s house in Awadhipur village using a shovel and an axe. The husband of the deceased Brijmohan registered a case against the three accused in Haridwar’s Khanpur police station. Sub inspector Mahar who was posted as the police station in-charge at that time investigated the matter.

Taking quick action in the case, he submitted a charge sheet against the culprits in the court on August 13, 2018. The court sentenced Kuldeep, Arun and Rahul to death under the rarest of rare category of section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. Mahar presented all concrete proofs, scientific evidence and witnesses that led the court to punish culprits with the death penalty and fine. The director general of police Ashok Kumar also congratulated Mahar for his achievement. He stated that it is a matter of pride that a police officer from the State has been selected for this prestigious honour.
