The Uttarakhand High Court has directed the Nainital district magistrate to submit a report within 10 days on the current status of the landslide at Baliyanala and the treatment done for the same so far. The division bench headed by the Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi issued this direction while hearing a public interest litigation regarding the landslide at Baliyanala. After the past orders of the court, the district administration has not submitted the sought report in the court so far. During the hearing on Monday the counsel representing the government sought time from the court to submit the report, considering which the HC granted 10 days time for the same.

During hearing on the PIL, the petitioner contended that the government is being negligent in this matter, adding that the district administration had not yet submitted the report sought from it. Ministers and officers have inspected the landslide affected area on many occasions so far but no concrete action has been taken so far to check the landslide, the petitioner averred. It is pertinent to mention here that Nainital based advocate Saiyad Nadeem Moon had filed the PIL in the High Court during 2018 stating that the landslide in Baliyanala poses a serious threat to the people in Nainital and nearby areas. The petitioner had contended that no concrete action is being taken to check the landslide in order to protect Nainital and the people.
