State to provide 5% sports quota in university admissions, 4% sports quota in State services: CM

Dhami flags off Uttarakhand contingent participating in 37th National Games
Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that the government is preparing rules for providing five per cent sports quota in university admissions and four per cent sports quota for jobs in State services. The CM said this while flagging off the contingent of players representing Uttarakhand in the 37th National Games in Goa from the CM residence here on Sunday. He presented sports kits and tracksuits to the players on the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, Dhami exhorted them to keep their morale high and represent Uttarakhand with dedication at the national level. The CM said, “The State government has arranged for financial assistance to players in case of mishaps during competition and travel to training camps. The government is also going to prepare rules for providing five per cent sports quota for admissions in vocational courses in universities. Action is also being taken to restore the four per cent sports quota for jobs in the State services.”
He said that the number of sports and sportspersons has increased this year while adding that sports culture is consistently developing in the State. The State government is making all possible efforts to develop sports culture in Uttarakhand, he said. The CM said that the State government is facilitating scholarships to talented and rising players to encourage sporting talent in the State. The new sports policy has been introduced in order to encourage sports and sportspersons in Uttarakhand. In order to boost interest in sports at the ground level, the government is providing a monthly scholarship of Rs 2,000 to players in the 14-23 years age group under the Mukhyamantri Khiladi Protsahan Yojana along with Rs 10,000 per year to purchase sports kits. Further, under the Mukhyamantri Udiyaman Khiladi Unnayan Yojana, monthly scholarships of Rs 1,500 are being provided to rising players in the eight to 14 years age group. The CM sports development fund has also been formed to provide swift financial benefit to players as per the rules, Dhami said.
Sports minister Rekha Arya said that with changing times, the opinion of people on sports has also changed. The State is consistently progressing in the field of sports, she averred. Special principal secretary Abhinav Kumar informed that a 240-member team from Uttarakhand is participating in the National Games this year. The team includes 177 players and 63 team officials. The team will participate in 23 sports, he said.
