The health experts in Dehradun have advised people to refrain from consuming street food during monsoon season to stay safe from monsoon-triggered ailments. People should rest satisfied with homemade meals to stay free from food poisoning and diarrhoea, they stressed in unison.
Talking to The Pioneer, a dietician at the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC), Richa Kukreti said that the consumption of oily food, especially street food, can lead to food poisoning. “What we find is that during the monsoon, with the volume of sales going up, the street food vendors often use stale oil or vegetables in preparing fast food for consumers. These stale ingredients can leave negative effects on individuals, causing food poisoning and acidity among other health issues. This is why we advise people to rest satisfied with homemade food during this season. This advice is all the more relevant now because some people love to fall on oily snacks like pakoras when it rains,” she said.
She advised people to prepare snacks like pakoras at home and limit their consumption to once a week rather than regularly. “Besides, during this season, physical activities decrease as people have to keep indoors. Diets should be in conformity with this deceased physical activity. One should consume light foods, salads and fruits during this time,” she added.
Asked by The Pioneer as to whether people should stay away from street food during monsoon, a physician at the GDMC, Dr Naresh said that consuming street food negatively impacts health. “People should shun such food items whose oil content is unhealthily high. Oily food if consumed in high measure raises blood pressure besides begetting acidity and diarrhoea,” he said, adding that they should rather go for a soft and light diet during the monsoon season to stay healthy and physically agile.
