Police expect 60 per cent reduction in Doon traffic after staggered timings of schools

After the approval of the Dehradun district magistrate Sonika, the timings of 21 schools in Dehradun will change from Friday. The administration has asked to keep school timings between 7 AM to 1:45 AM to reduce congestion during peak morning hours. The police expect that this plan will reduce about 60 per cent traffic congestion during peak hours on weekdays. The police sought objections from these schools regarding timing changes but nobody has raised any concerns so far, the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said. He informed that these 21 schools are mainly situated in Dalanwala, East Canal Road, Rajpur Road, Nehru Colony, Subhash Road and Curzon Road where traffic is severely affected in morning and afternoon. Over 25,000 students study in these schools and most of them do not have sufficient parking space inside them. The SSP said that most of these schools were built 15-20 years ago when traffic and parking was not a massive issue in the city due to which, most of these do not have ample parking space. The police made the plan of changing the timings after talking to the representatives of these schools regarding the traffic jam during peak hours. They responded positively and have raised no objection regarding the plan so far, he said. Singh stated that this strategic move aims to alleviate peak hour traffic in Dehradun, providing a smoother commute for residents and ensuring a safer and more efficient travel experience for students and their families. By staggering the school timings, the traffic load will get distributed more evenly throughout the morning and afternoon, reducing bottlenecks and easing congestion. He said that the police plan to continuously monitor the impact of these changes and are open to further adjustments based on feedback from schools, parents and local citizens.
