DVMUVM asks traders to ensure verification of shop staff

Wednesday, 11 SEPTEMBER 2024  | PNS | DEHRADUN

Considering the recent incident involving the alleged harassment of a female student by a worker at a footwear shop in Paltan Bazaar, the Doon Valley Mahanagar Udyog Vyapar Mandal (DVMUVM) has asked all traders in the market to ensure the verification of their workers at the time of hiring. This request stems from the need to bolster safety and security measures in the main city market. Notably, on September 7 it was reported that a worker at a footwear shop allegedly molested a female student, following which she registered a complaint against the accused at the police station. Considering this, several shopkeepers expressed their apprehensions and urged the authorities to enhance security protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future. Subsequently, the district magistrate and senior superintendent of police acknowledged the gravity of the situation and instructed officials concerned to oversee the safety and security arrangements at the market.

In light of recent incidents, many shopkeepers have voiced their concerns, leading some to close their shops for the entire day on Monday. Addressing the safety and security situation at the market, the president of DVMUVM Pankaj Mason also expressed apprehension regarding a reported incident of molestation on the premises. To prevent similar incidents in the future, they have requested officials concerned to enhance safety measures at the market, including the installation of CCTV cameras, thorough verifications and setting up of two female police booths. Mason informed that the installation of CCTV cameras at the market has already begun in response to their demands. Additionally, the police have also taken street vendors on Tuesday from the market to the police station to complete their verification procedures.

He further emphasised that they has been conducting the verification process of the shopkeepers themselves, while the responsibility of verifying their workers individually lies with the shopkeepers. In light of the recent incident, they have reiterated the directive to traders and shopkeepers in the market to ensure that they complete the verification of each worker employed at their shop. Any similar incidents in the future will not be tolerated, and stern actions will be taken against the individuals involved, he added.
