UP govt announces Rs 5 L ex gratia to next of kin of deceased children

A day after electrical short circuit caused a fire that engulfed the children’s ward of a medical college in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi district killing 10 newborns, the State government ordered a three-tier probe and announced Rs five lakh ex gratia to the parents of each deceased. Further, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an assistance amount of Rs two lakh for the next of kin of each deceased. The DM said that the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the facility had caught fire at around 10.45 pm on Friday. The deputy chief minister Brijesh Pathak who has been camping in the hospital on the instructions of the chief minister said that 16 children had been undergoing treatment in other wards of the medical college.
