Pithoragarh’s Colonel Rajneesh Joshi becomes principal of HMI in Darjeeling

A native of Bungachina village in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand Colonel Rajneesh Joshi (44) has been appointed as the principal of the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) in Darjeeling. He has become the second officer from Uttarakhand to lead this renowned institution. 

With over 30 summit ascents, Joshi is a seasoned mountaineer who has undergone specialised training in Nepal and France, earning recognition in the Asia and India Book of Records. His next expedition, scheduled for August next year, will involve leading an NCC team to conquer Mount Everest. Expressing his gratitude, Joshi remarked that leading a globally acclaimed institution like HMI is an honour.

He emphasised his commitment to upholding the institute’s legacy of promoting mountaineering and adventure sports. The HMI has been a hub for mountaineering excellence and Joshi’s appointment marks a continuation of Uttarakhand’s rich legacy in this field. Major ND Juyal from Uttarakhand had also served as the principal of HMI earlier, highlighting the region’s contribution to the country’s mountaineering history.
