Lawyers seek relief from black coats amid scorching heat

With Dehradun sizzling under  heatwave, a High Court advocate Shiva Verma has written to the registrar general (RG) of the High Court, requesting exemption or relaxation from wearing black coats during the summer season. Following this, the Bar Association of Dehradun also wrote to the RG on Saturday, supporting Verma.

The president of Bar Association, Dehradun, Anil Kukreti requested that lawyers be allowed to avoid wearing black coats during extreme heat, as it causes discomfort and may affect their health.

Advocate Verma said that the extreme heat has made it very difficult for the lawyers to wear black coats inside the courtroom. “This is not only causing discomfort but may also negatively affect our health. The request has been made under Rule 615 of the General Rules (Civil),” he said.

He explained that under this rule, there is a provision for relaxation in dress code during the summer season. As per this rule, instead of black coats, lawyers can wear light-coloured coats, achkan or sherwani.

“Districts like Dehradun, Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar are the most affected by the extreme heat condition this summer, so such relaxation is necessary,” Verma added.

Kukreti said that this request is not new. “In the past too, the High Court had given relaxation from wearing black coats during the summer season,” he stated.
