Music director and teacher Shreyash Shandiliya believes that success in the music field is not necessarily about natural ability; it’s about strategy, self-knowledge and unwavering dedication. For up-and-coming musicians wanting to leave a lasting impression in the indie or mainstream music industry, Shandilya suggested focusing on mastering the art before pursuing visibility. “Too many young musicians are more concerned with becoming famous before they’re even prepared to live-rehearse or write a whole track,” he said.
He advocates for tough training—both formal and self-taught—as a base. Whether it’s studying music theory, comprehending the creation of sound, or classically vocal or instrumental training, artists need to spend time and discipline building their craft. He also emphasises the need to learn about the technical aspects of music, like software, mixing and digital distribution, particularly in the digital-first environment of today.
He further suggested that one should create a personal brand and artistic identity. In the era of social media and information overload, having a distinctive voice is more important than ever before. He encourages young artists to discover their style, not only the way they sing or write music, but the values and narratives behind it. Finally, Shandilya emphasises the importance of patience and business acumen. Music is not merely art—it’s a vocation too.
One needs to know about royalties, copyrights, performance rights and contracts. Shandiliya is an Indian music composer, lyricist, singer, and entrepreneur who has created more than 50 original compositions and remixed 150 plus songs, working with celebrated artists like Krishna Beura, Suraj Jagan, Shweta Pandit and Padma Shri receipient Anup Jalota. He is the founder of SoulFul Musik Academy, a music education and production hub based out of Mumbai, and the chief of HS Musik Company and other creative projects under SoulFul 1 World.
